EV charger and panel upgrade: choose the sequence first

An EV charger does not automatically require a larger electrical service. The useful first step is a load review with the charger’s actual equipment and the rest of the home’s planned loads.

What should the charger quote specify?

Ask for the charging equipment, proposed circuit, installation location, route and required permit. Share the vehicle and charging needs, but let the electrician assess the installation rather than choosing a breaker from the vehicle’s maximum charging capability.

  • Distance, access and existing equipment can affect the installation scope.

What if the panel is crowded?

A subpanel can address distribution space without increasing the utility service’s capacity. An approved load-management design can be another option to investigate.

  • Ask the electrician to explain what each option solves and how the calculation supports it.
  • Neither spare slots nor a full panel alone proves the service-upgrade answer.

Should a heat pump be planned at the same time?

Include heat pump, auxiliary heat and water-heating plans in the assessment before committing to panel work. Coordinating equipment information early can reveal whether one service project should cover several planned loads.

  • It also helps identify which parts can be staged without paying for an incompatible arrangement twice.

Does the utility need to be notified?

That depends on the utility and scope. PSE identifies EV charging among work that may need notification, and Tacoma’s handbook routes added loads through engineering.

  • The electrical permit is a separate obligation.
  • Ask who checks each requirement and what written evidence will support the final design.

How should future charging needs enter the scope?

Tell the electrician whether a second vehicle or another significant electrical load is planned. Ask what the present design includes and whether a later installation would need reassessment.

  • Include equipment supply, circuit installation, any load controls and restoration in the comparison.
  • Charging speed, accepted load management and the home’s service capacity interact; a larger charger rating is not automatically the best project choice or proof that a service increase is necessary.
